Tracheostomy Tube Cuffed ! Manufacturer and Exporter ! Medisafe International
A Tracheostomy tube is a hollow, curved medical device inserted through a surgical incision in the neck directly into the tracheal. It creates a dedicated airway that allows a patient to breathe without using their mouth or nose, bypassing obstructions in the upper respiratory tract or facilitating long-term mechanical ventilation.
Key Functions
-
Airway Maintenance: Bypasses blocked upper airways caused by tumors, severe swelling, trauma, or paralysis.
-
Ventilator Support: Provides a secure connection for patients requiring long-term mechanical ventilation.
-
Secretions Management: Allows direct suctioning of mucus or fluid from the lungs in patients unable to cough effectively.
Main Components
-
Outer Cannula: The main shaft of the tube that holds the stoma (opening) in the neck open.
-
Inner Cannula: A removable tube inside the outer cannula that can be regularly taken out for cleaning or replacement without disturbing the stoma.
-
Neck Flange (Faceplate): Resting flat against the neck, it has side eyelets to attach straps or ties that hold the tube securely in place.
-
Cuff (Optional): An inflatable balloon near the end of the tube that creates a seal inside the trachea. This directs airflow through the ventilator and prevents aspirates from entering the lungs.
-
Obturator: A rounded guide used only during initial insertion to smooth the path, removed immediately after placement.
Types of Tracheostomy Tubes
| Type | Key Feature | Best Used For |
| Cuffed | Inflatable balloon seals the trachea | Patients on mechanical ventilators or at high risk of aspiration. |
| Uncuffed | No balloon seal; allows air movement around the tube | Patients transitioning off ventilators who can swallow safely. |
| Fenestrated | Contains small holes along the curve | Facilitating speaking and natural coughing by directing air upward across the vocal cords. |
